Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Final Poll - What do you find most annoying about Bob Weir

This will be my final poll for a while, and I appreciate the feedback that you all have given me. There are so many shows, and while I hope to get all the greats in my collection ultimately, it helps to not have to sift through every single song they ever played.

Before I begin the question, let me start with, I think Bob Weir is grate, especially in the 80s and later, 85 being a particularly good year for him.

Today's question - What do you find most annoying about Bob Weir? (Things he did, does, songs he sang, anything about Bob, his short shorts, etc.)

I find the most annoying thing that Bob Weir did was the WHISTLE at the beginning of Truckin'! What a groove buster.

Disco clothes in 77. Heaven Help The Fool. The 77 beard. The 2007 beard. The shorts.

Top five things about Bob Weir that I find annoying

#5 The Beard
#4 The Shorts
#3 The disco dead he at times injected into the band
#2 The "Gawd I'm Tired but if I have to I'll Play anyway" sound that I hear from Ratdog on occasion

and the #1 thing I find annoying about Bob Weir is.....

The mindless screaming and ranting he tacks on to the end of some songs just for the hell of it!!

Having said that I am firmly in the "fan of Bobby camp" and I enjoy and praise his influences in the band. I also listen to Ratdog and enjoy that band. I think that the growth and development of Ratdog show that Bobby has become a great band leader.

Sooo many people complain about Donna's screeching during PITB, Scarlet Beg, etc, but I say that Bob's screeches were just as bad if not worse than Donna's---if only because he was doing it AFTER Donna left AND, he's still doing it. Think about his mindless wails at the end of Sug Mag & NFA---"Not Fade AWAYCGHCCHG!!!" or "AYE-YAAA!!!"

At least Jerry & Phil didn't do that.

El Fucking Paso

Actually what annoys me the most about Weir is fact that I have had to listen to one too many "Deadheads" go on and on about how annoying Weir was, how much they hated him, how cheesey...I was in Roanoke in '87, on the floor and waiting for the show to start, and a group of 3-4 near me were just tearing the guy to pieces- his songs, his vocals, his clothes...it just finally got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. I turned to all of them and with the biggest smile I could muster said "Man, it really sucks that you have to be here tonight- if he bothers you THAT much, why don't you just stick to the fucking Garcia Band and end your suffering?"

Seriously, I can see where the guy sets himself up for a little abuse, and 95% of it is in good fun, but some people just get asinine. I've heard things said about Weir at a Dead show that, if they'd been said about Jerry, the person would have needed a police escort to leave the building.

Well, I think we can all learn a lesson here. Jerry realized early on that the key to fashion was the old Haines black t-shirt. Bobby took the hard way. Those shorts were something else, but I've got to say that the '85 Bob beats the bearded '77 Bob in fashion sense. I can just imagine how uncomfortable he must have been up there under the stage lights with his long-sleeved polyester shirt tucked in to his polyester pants.

But all joking aside, Bob doesn't really annoy me. I like his sense of humor.

I find bob to be the perfect foil for garcia. The screaming rocker, especially the deep sound his guitar made in 93 or so and on. I always waited with anticipacition the colorful accents he added to certain lines like the clear pin prick after "i can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines'. That said he is cheeezy, cheezy answers man.

I am surprized no one has mentioned the legendary and long climb to learn slide guitar on stage in the 80's, I assumed that was a prime example.

The screams...especially in the reincarnated Lovelights. Once, while listening to a show in the car, I got to a Bobby Lovelight. My fiancee (girlfriend at the time) asked me to skip the song. She almost NEVER asks me to skip a song when I'm driving, except if it's bluegrass, which I usually don't play when she's in the car. That was her way of telling me that the Bobby screams were too much and too awful to bear.

I think this question is best directed at Richard Simmons. After all, he stole his look.

Never liked his bit at the end of Estimated. His "Yaaaaaah!, Yaaah-yaaah!" sounded like it would be better suited on a cattle drive. And I bet he likes chaps.

glass half full; glass half empty.
there might be plenty that bothers and/or grates, but the guy has done a lot of good stuff; brought a lot to the table. Still, today, I try to take him in measured doses - and for the most part that works for me.

Without a doubt he is vastly under-recognized as a musician. He has raised rythym guitar playing to a true art form, and he was doing it early on. Just listen to his work in the Birdsong from PNE 6/22/73. Brilliant!

There’s really not that much about Weir that irritates me – if the guy wants to grow a beard and wear unfortunate garments upon his nether regions that’s up to him. I’m not his girlfriend. I’m not overly fond of Bob getting up a high emotional head of steam and wailing at me like a soulful hippopotamus calling for its long lost mate across the Limpopo River. Certain renditions of Looks like Rain particularly fall into this category. And I do think that Saint/Sailor is a particularly irksome and unlovely pairing that I’m likely to skip most times, though I believe there are one or two who like those songs.

"...like a soulful hippopotamus calling for its long lost mate across the Limpopo River". There has to be some kind of award that can be given to anyone who is able to work soulful hippopotamus and the Limpopo into a thread. Good work.

I'd love to say the shorts but i'd be a hypocrite. I loved wearing cutoffs to gigs. Unfortunately, I cut a pair so short one time a nut was hanging out. Not a pretty sight.

Weir's responses to fan questions on NYE PPV gig always annoyed me. he seemed be be answering everything and cutting the rest of the band off. Other than that I liked Bob and his tunes/playing

The most annoying thing about Bob Weir for me is that he somehow prompts inquiries like this.

The at times incessant and seemingly pointless screaming, or rather, screeching, the nut-hugging shorts, and facial attempt to join ZZ-Top are understandably oft-mentioned in this thread. I agree, however, that it appears all too often that when he's playing today it just seems he would rather be somewhere else, with someone else, doing something else. What is probably just fatigue or maybe boredom I can't help but see somewhat differently.

I mean, I kinda get it. He's seen, been a part of and been through so much from both a personal and proffesional standpoint I can understand this sentiment to an extent. Hell, I may even be waaaaay off in my opinion but I can't shake the feeling I get today that there is an underlying feeling of superiority or even arrogance to Bobby today. I'm completely aware of the possibility that it is my own cynicism that makes me feel this way but, damn,I just can't help it.

I would love for nothing more than one of you to assuage me from this thought as I feel a little bad for feeling this way. Shed a light, anyone?

A friend has won me over to how important Bob was to the band's jamming, and I sometimes marvel at the weird-ass intervals that he vamps discretely while everyone else is whaling away. That said, the misogyny in a lot of the songs he sings bugs me (yeah, Barlow wrote them, but Bob endorses them), and other than 5-25-77 I could do without Mexicali Blues.

I like Bob, I think Bob rocks. He's a very innovative rhythm guitarist. If I had to gripe about something it would have to be his song selection. Between El Paso and Me and My Uncle I am fairly well burned out on the cowboy tunes.
And as an added question. How many times did the Dead play Samson and Delilah in 1977?

While I was looking for that answer I found this link.

I'm listening to this show right now. With a China Cat>Rider opener to the Dark Star>Truckin'>Morning Dew, Sugar Magnolia ending. Pretty nice show from start to finish. Good sound. Good setlist. Perfect way to start any morning.

Wish they would have played Box of Rain more often.

And you have to love Bob's slide guitar playing when Jerry sings "she shot him in the balls" in Stagger Lee.
